Texas Tech junior combined to shoot 11-over at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Sofia Garcia's trip to Augusta National will likely be one she remembers for a lifetime.
Â
The Texas Tech junior missed the cut of the Augusta National Women's Amateur on Thursday after combining to shoot 11-over-par over 36 holes. She will remain in Georgia through the weekend as she will play the country's most famous course as part of a practice round Friday.
Â
"We're incredibly proud of Sofia and how she represented Texas Tech this week," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "She definitely proved she belongs among the world's top amateurs, and her best golf is only in front of her. She will play in these types of tournaments for the rest of her career."
Â
Garcia's stay in Augusta started strong as she birdied the par-5 third and the par-4 fifth during Wednesday's opening round but struggled on the back nine before finishing 5-over on the day. She followed with a 6-over 78 card Thursday to close her stay in a tie for 51st overall, four strokes off the cut.
Â
The opportunity to play in a tournament setting at Augusta was a dream for Garcia, who became the first woman from her native Paraguay to participate in the event. Garcia was slated to also play in the 2020 event that was eventually canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
Garcia will rejoin the Red Raiders next week when Tech competes in the Cowgirl Match Play event hosted by Oklahoma State on April 11-12 in Stillwater. It will be the final event on Tech's schedule before the Big 12 Championships on April 18-20 in Houston.
