Red Raiders to Compete at 2021 Big 12 Championship
April 23, 2021 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 22-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team is set to compete at the 2021 Big 12 Championship next week at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The conference tournament is being hosted at Prairie Dunes for the 13th time and will play out as a par-70, 6,947-yard track for the 10 teams vying for the title.
The format will consist of a total of 72 holes across three days with 36 holes scheduled on Monday, followed by 18 holes each on Tuesday and Wednesday. Seeded fourth, the Red Raiders are paired with Texas in the opening round that will begin at 8:45 a.m. on No. 1.
The Red Raiders will be represented by Ludvig Aberg, Kyle Hogan, Garrett Martin, Andy Lopez and Baard Skogen. With last year's Big 12 Championship being canceled due to the coronavirus, Hogan is the only player who competed at the 2019 tournament. Tech is coming off a pair of fourth-place finishes to complete the regular-season after taking fourth at the Aggie Invitational and the Thunderbird Collegiate.
A sophomore from Sweden, Aberg tied for the championship at the Thunderbird to secure his second title of the season and comes into the conference tournament at No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Aberg is a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award and has finished in the top-10 in six of eight tournaments this season. He also won The Prestige in February to begin the spring season. Martin, a sophomore from San Antonio, also performed well in Arizona in the last tournament by taking ninth at the Thunderbird. He was 9-under during the 54-hole event and also has a third-place showing on his resume coming at the Texas Invitational. Hogan began the season with a win at the Maridoe Collegiate and competed at the Houston Open with an exemption, while Lopez secured a sixth-place finish at the Aggie Invitational for his best finish of his senior season.Â
Texas Tech finished fifth at the 2019 Big 12 Championship at The Greenbrier in West Virginia in the last championship held. The Red Raiders are looking to win their first conference tournament title with their best results coming as the runner-up in 2014 and 2015. Tech's Chris Ward won the 2010 individual title for the Red Raiders' only individual title.
Pairings for the first round are based off the most recent Sagarin ratings. The second round, also played on Day 1, will remain with the same pairings. However, the starting tees will be switched. The second round is scheduled to begin 5 ½ hours after the first-round tee times. Pairings for the second and third days will be based on team results from the previous rounds. An awards ceremony will be conducted following the final round on Wednesday.
No. 1 Oklahoma leads four Big 12 teams in the top 17 of the Sagarin rankings with all squads ranked within the top 87 of 292 NCAA Division I programs. Play will begin on the No. 1 tee at 8 a.m. CT on Monday with the Sooners and No. 3 Oklahoma State. No. 7 Texas and No. 17 Texas Tech are scheduled in the second grouping at 8:45 a.m., followed by West Virginia and Iowa State starting at 9:30 a.m. Tee times for the No. 10 hole begin at 8:22 a.m. with Baylor and TCU playing together followed by the pairing of Kansas and Kansas State at 9:07 a.m.Â
Spectators are permitted based on local/state guidelines, which are subject to change. It is requested that spectators wear masks and follow physical distancing protocols, including remaining at least 15 yards away from student-athletes, coaches and other team personnel. Spectators must also keep distanced from tee boxes and greens. The event is free of charge.
