Hinton Off to Strong Start in Hep, Bouwer Good in Javelin

Texas Tech has begun its final home meet of the season.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech began its final home meet of the season, the Corky/Crofoot Classic, with a great heptathlon start and encouraging marks in the javelin and hammer throws.

Kaylee Hinton and Callie Jones competed in the heptathlon seeking improved marks heading into the postseason. Hinton began what evolved into a terrific day on the strong note she needed, setting a wind-legal PR of 13.54 in the 100m hurdles. Jones, who compiled a career-best 5,577 points in Arizona three weeks ago, began with a 14.07. After the wind-legal PR in the hurdles, Hinton would nearly PR in the high jump at 5'-9.75" (1.76m) before capturing a career best in the shot put at 36'-7.5" (11.16m). She would finish with a 24.29 in the 200m – just over a tenth of a second from her personal best. She will open tomorrow standing at an impressive 3,531 points. Jones, who won the shot and nearly PR'd in both the high jump (5'-5.75") and 200m (25.32), will enter Saturday with 3,271 points.

Werner Bouwer got back up over 70m for the eighth time in his career. His best throw landed at 230'-11" (70.39m) – his first 70-meter throw of the season – which moves him into the top-20 in the nation. Bouwer, a two-time All-American, is the school record-holder in the event.

Kayli Johnson led the way over at the hammer throw, winning the women's event half a meter from a career mark. Johnson's top throw landed at 181'-3" (55.24m). Gabe Oladipo was over 200 feet again, today marking 204'-5" (62.30m). He currently sits 26^th in the West region with a top season mark of 206'-10" (63.04m) – just a centimeter from the school record.

The second day of the Corky/Crofoot Shootout will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the 5000m. Later, at 1 p.m., field events will begin before running events get underway at 3:30 p.m.
