Tech completes first day of multis competition in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. – Texas Tech began its first home weekend with a multis squad dispatched to Arizona for the Jim Click Shootout Multis.
"It's been awesome getting back outdoors for a combined events competition for the first time in 2 years," said associate head coach James Thomas. "No matter the incredible highs or unfortunate lows, I'm excited to see how they each respond on day two."
Callie Jones led the pack and will lead the pack into the final day of the multis competition, sitting in third place in the heptathlon. Jones used two career bests en route to tallying 3,343 points. Kaylee Hinton is in seventh with 3,276.
Hinton began the day with a near-PR in the 100mH, clocking 13.63. Jones ran 13.91 – her first sub-14 race of her career. The pair then each finished the high jump with a top clearance of 5'-6.5" (1.69m), which marked a career best for Jones. With a PR in the hurdles last week at Baylor and a PR in the 100m in the season opener in Abilene, Jones had recorded a career best in three of her four meets this season. She was not done. Later, she would run 25.14 in the 200m, another career best. The time would move her into third in the standings, where she would finish after the first four events.
The German vice champion in the decathlon, Fynn Zenker, led the way for Tech in his first outdoor multis as a collegian competitor. Zenker compiled 3,576 points through his first five events, with top performances in the 400m (50.11) and shot put (41'-7.75"). Kale Mauritsen will enter Friday sitting in ninth
