May 21, 2021 | Baseball
The second baseman ranks among the top-five nationally in home runs, RBI and slugging
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Jace Jung has been named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced Friday afternoon.
Â
Jung is one of 42 players around the nation, six from the Big 12 and three second basemen to make the cut for the award, which is presented each season to the top player in college baseball.
Â
Jung is the fifth Red Raider to be named a semifinalist since 2017, joining Josh Jung (2018, 2019), Grant Little (2018), Steven Gingery (2017) and Hunter Hargrove (2017).
Â
A COVID-freshman, Jung ranks near the national lead in home runs (20), RBI (65) and slugging (.779), leading the Big 12 in all three categories. He's the first Big 12 freshman to hit 20 home runs in a season since 2000 and the first Red Raider to do so since 2004.
Â
Not only has he hit for power, but he's consistently reached base as well, doing so in all 47 games this season for the longest streak by a Red Raider since Cameron Blair went for 53 straight from 2004-05. As of Friday night, Jung's streak became the longest active streak in the nation.
Â
The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager, who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
Â
This is the 34th year of the Dick Howser Trophy. The finalists will be announced on June 10. The 2021 award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series.
