Gray Named First Team Academic All-American
May 28, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – For the first time in her career, Texas Tech women's basketball senior Vivian Gray has been named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American, the organization announced with the release of their basketball Academic All-America awards on Friday.
Â
It marks the second time that Gray has been named to an Academic All-America team, as she was voted to the third team in 2020. Gray is the only repeat member of the Division I women's team from last season.
Â
Gray is joined on the first team by Aliyah Boston (South Carolina)—who was named the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year—along with Kailey Coffey (Northern Kentucky), Lexie Hull (Stanford) and Sam Thomas (Arizona). Gray and Kansas State's Ayoka Lee on the second team are the Big 12's only representatives on the list.
Â
It marks the third-straight season that the Lady Raiders have had a selection on the Academic All-America team, after Brittany Brewer was named the women's basketball Academic All-America Team Member of the Year last year along with being named to the first team in both 2019 and 2020. The pair of Lady Raiders are the first two in program history to earn first team accolades.
Â
Gray, a graduate student, achieved a 4.0 GPA in her first semester of grad school at Texas Tech, while on the court also leading the Lady Raiders in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks on the way to honorable mention All-America honors and First Team All-Big 12 accolades.
Â
Gray finished the season averaging 19.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.4 steals, reaching career highs in rebounds, blocks and field goal percentage (.438). She recorded eight double-doubles on the season and 13 games of 20 or more points to rank fourth in the Big 12.
Â
The Argyle, Texas, native is the only Power Five player in the country averaging 19.5+ points, 8+ rebounds and 2.5+ assists this season, per HerHoopStats.com. She is one of two players nationally with those numbers--the other being Kierstan Bell of FGCU.
Â
Seven of the 15 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women's basketball teams sport a perfect 4.0 GPA in either undergrad or graduate school. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.81, with the complete 15-member women's team averaging a 3.84 GPA.
