Lady Raiders Earn Ninth-Straight NCAA Tournament Bid
May 03, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team earned its ninth-straight NCAA Tournament selection on Monday evening and will travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tennis Tournament this weekend.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be the No. 2 seed at this weekend's four-team regional, joining San Diego, Grand Canyon and host UCLA.
Â
Texas Tech will face the region's No. 3 seed San Diego in the first-round match on Friday or Saturday. Should they advance, the Lady Raiders will play the winner of UCLA and Grand Canyon in the second round.
Â
Looking to build off of a 15-8 overall season to this point, the Lady Raiders finished the conference season at 6-3 in Big 12 play to finish third in the league standings—outpacing their preseason projection. It was Tech's best conference finish since 2018, and the team was 7-2 at home and 7-5 on the road.
Â
The Lady Raiders opened the season winning, seven of their first eight matches, including a big, 4-3 win over then-No. 23 Arizona State in Lubbock in February. Texas Tech opened the conference season 3-0 with dominant wins over TCU, Kansas and Kansas State to serve up Big 12 play.
Â
The team won five of seven matches on a tough, extended road trip that spanned from March 19 to April 10. Among the highlights of the stretch was a pair of 4-3 road victories over Oklahoma and Oklahoma State that marked the first sweep of the Oklahoma schools for the program since 2018.
