Texas Tech senior will now be eligible for possible Academic All-America recognition
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior offensive lineman Dawson Deaton was recently recognized for his work in the classroom as he was tabbed to the Academic All-District list voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Â
This is the first career CoSIDA academic honor for Deaton, who is now eligible for possible Academic All-America recognition based on his achievements academically and athletically. CoSIDA membership will vote on the Academic All-America ballot in the coming weeks with an announcement in early July.
Â
Deaton, a native of Frisco, Texas, is the first Red Raider to garner All-District accolades since current NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes II and defensive back Justis Nelson were honored in 2016. Mahomes went on to become the 10th Academic All-American in program history later that year.
Â
Deaton has excelled not only in the trenches but also in the classroom throughout his Texas Tech career as he earned his undergraduate degree in marketing from Texas Tech in December 2020. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 first team honoree, Deaton compiled a 3.54 GPA as an undergrad and has followed up with a perfect 4.0 GPA through his first semester as a master's student.
Â
Deaton is currently an interdisciplinary studies major with concentrations in educational leadership and educational psychology entering his senior season as a Red Raider.
Â
On the field, Deaton has anchored a Tech offensive line that has ranked in the top 30 each of the last two seasons in fewest sacks allowed despite protecting for one of the most pass-heavy offenses in the country. Deaton enters the 2021 season with 23-consecutive starts on the offensive line, including each of the past 22 from his spot at center.
Â
Deaton will look to extend that streak when the 2021 football season commences Sept. 4 against Houston. Kickoff for the Texas Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. from NRG Stadium in Houston.
