Texas Tech was recently represented by three student-athletes at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics recently had three student-athletes accepted to the NCAA Career in Sports Forum on May 26. The virtual, three-day event allows student-athletes the opportunity to learn about various sports careers from industry experts across the country.
Â
Representing Texas Tech this year were softball infielder Myamie Thompson, track and field sprinter Kiara Lester and volleyball outside hitter Haley Harman. Thompson and Lester both submitted applications to be accepted to attend the forum, while Harman was invited after being chosen as a recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Scholarship.
Â
Using various teaching methods, including panels, facilitated discussions and keynote presentations, industry experts covered multiple career development topics such as the following: self-awareness and its role in professional development; practical approaches to the sports job search; personal branding; developing a career plan; managing yourself as a professional in the sports industry.
Â
Attendees must be nominated by their school or conference, and only junior and senior student-athletes are eligible to attend. NCAA member schools may nominate up to five qualified student-athletes each year to complete the online application.
Â
All three student-athletes selected also participated in the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy's annual Suited for Success Career Series, which helps prepare student-athletes for life after college by providing education and resources on how to choose a career path and pursue it after graduation.
