LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Texas Tech volleyball team continues to rack up the academic accolades, this time earning the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced Monday, July 19.
The USMC-AVCA Team Academic Award honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
The Red Raiders finished the 2020-21 academic school year with a team GPA of 3.56 and multiple student-athletes received Big 12 Academic honors. Tech landed a program record 14 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball team, which led the conference. Thirteen of the fourteen Red Raiders earned first team distinction, including a league-best six student-athletes with perfect 4.00 GPAs.
Mackenzie Morgan, Reese Rhodes and Maddie O'Brien picked up 2020-21 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors during their first season in Lubbock. While Red Raider senior Emerson Solano garnered 2020-21 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team honors during her final season in the scarlet and black.
Tech's success in the classroom has seen a major spike since head coach Tony Graystone came to Lubbock. The honor marks the third straight season the Red Raiders have earned the AVCA Academic Team Award and the fifth time since the awards first started in 1992-93. Tech has also placed 10 or more student-athletes on an Academic All-Big 12 team in each of the last three seasons.
