Aberg, Scott Named to Haskins Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg and Sandy Scott have been named to a 20-player preseason watch list for the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel. The Haskins Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding men's college golfer, as voted on by players, coaches and media members. Both Red Raiders are on the preseason watch list for the second straight season.Â
Aberg is currently at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, while Scott has fallen out of the top-10 after not competing in the past year due to a wrist injury. A senior from Scotland, Scott has been as high as No. 4 in the WAGR and is a two-time all-America who has decided to return to play this season for the Red Raiders.The Golf Channel named Aberg as the top player in the nation and Scott at No. 16 coming into this season in its preseason list.Â
Of the 20 players listed on the preseason watch list, six are from the state with Texas having three players in Pierceson Coody, Cole Hammer and Travis Vick and Texas A&M being represented by Sam Bennett. Oklahoma State joins Tech with two players on the list with Eugenio Chacarra and Bo Jim.
A junior from Sweden, Aberg is coming off an all-America sophomore season where he finished eighth overall at the NCAA Championship and earned two victories during the collegiate season. He finished as the European Amateur Championship runner-up this summer and also competed at the European Amateur Team Championship and U.S. Amateur Championship.
Past winners of the Haskins Award include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw and last season's winner, John Pak.
Texas Tech begins a four-tournament fall schedule next week at The Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach from Sept. 3-5 in California. The team will also compete at the Maridoe (Sept. 13-5), Blessings Collegiate (Oct. 4-6) and the Big 12 Match Play Tournament (Oct. 11-13).
