
SOCCER PREVIEW: vs. Abilene Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech and Abilene Christian are set for a soccer matchup on Sunday night under the lights with the game starting at 7 p.m. at the Walker Soccer Complex.
The Red Raiders (2-0-1) are coming off a 1-0 win over Hartford on Thursday with freshman Ashleigh Williams scoring the goal and the defensive unit allowing only one shot on goal. TTU goalkeeper Madison White recorded her second shutout of the season by making one save against the Hawks (2-1-0) and now has 11 career shutouts behind a Red Raider defense which has allowed only nine total shots through three games.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Abilene Christian (1-1-0) is playing its first game in a week after securing a 1-0 win over UTEP last Sunday in El Paso. Natalie Jones scored the game-winner for the Wildcats who responded from a 2-1 overtime loss at New Mexico State to open their season. A junior from Lubbock who went to Frenship HS, Jones has scored both of ACU's goals this season coming into Sunday's matchup against TTU. The Wildcats are playing their third straight road game to start the season.
Texas Tech and ACU will be meeting for the fifth time with the Wildcats making the trip to Lubbock each time. The Red Raiders are 4-0 all-time in the series, including a 3-0 on Sept. 6, 2019 in the last matchup between the two programs. TTU has outscored ACU by a 10-1 margin in the four matchups leading into Sunday's game.
"They're a feisty team," Texas Tech coach Tom Stone said. "They're our neighbors and we know them really well. It's always a scrap against them."
Williams recorded her first career goal in her first career start for the Red Raiders, striking in the 65th minute of play for what proved to be the game-winner. The goal was assisted by Charlotte Teeter who now has two assists this season after also assisting on Macy Schultz's equalizer last Sunday in the 1-1 draw at UC San Diego. A senior from Georgia, Teeter has six assists in her career for the Red Raiders.
Kirsten Davis scored the first goal of the season for the Red Raiders in the 1-0 win over UTEP in the season-opener on Aug. 19 and leads the team with 12 shots this season. Davis did not play on Thursday against Hartford due to injury. Williams is second on the team with five shots on goal through three games, with three coming against Hartford while Teeter and Schultz have three shots on goal coming into Sunday's game against ACU.
Texas Tech owns a 21-4 shots on goal advantage over its three opponents this season and has allowed only one shot on goal through the first two home games after blanking UTEP in the opener. The defensive unit has been led by Hannah Anderson and Cassie Hiatt who have played all 290 minutes this season. A junior from Plano, Anderson has started all 37 games she's played in for the Red Raiders in her career.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 32 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).
THE TEAM: Texas Tech has 33 players on its roster with 20 returners and 13 newcomers. The Red Raiders have 11 freshmen on the roster along with adding transfers in Eva Hurm (Notre Dame) and Sierra Castles (Long Beach State).
OUR LEADER: Tom Stone picked up his 161st win with the victory over Hartford. A Dallas native who graduated from Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
OUR GOLD MEDALIST: Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will remain at home next week when they host Cal State Fullerton and UTSA to complete the four-game home stand. TTU will take on Fullerton on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. before finishing off the home stand against UTSA at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5. The team will then travel to Arizona to play in the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson with games against Arizona and Arizona State.
