Texas Tech hosted a 90-minute workout Friday afternoon to start the 2021 season
LUBBOCK, Texas – The sound of football was back at the Football Practice Facility Friday afternoon as Texas Tech officially opened preseason camp with a roughly 90 minute workout.
It was the first of two practices in helmets for the Red Raiders, who will have 22 workouts in total leading up to the Sept. 4 season opener against Houston in the Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium. Tech will return to the FTF practice fields again Saturday before resting Sunday and resuming camp with a padded practice Monday.
Matt Wells enters his third preseason camp as head coach of the Red Raiders in what he described as his deepest roster to date during his reporting day press conference Thursday afternoon. The Red Raiders bring back 45 letterwinners from a year ago to go along with 15 starters on both sides of the ball.
The term 'super senior' is likely to be a popular one in college football for the next several years as it indicates seniors who decided to return for one final season as part of an NCAA waiver for the 2020 COVID-19-shortened campaign. Tech has 12 super seniors on its roster alone, nine of which chose to return for another season at Tech.
Wells and his staff will rely heavily on that experience as the Red Raiders lead all Big 12 Conference programs with their 12 super seniors. Of that total, six super seniors were named to the leadership council Thursday in a vote of their teammates.
The football program's social media accounts - @TexasTechFB on Twitter and @TexasTech_FB on Instagram – will have extensive coverage of the Red Raiders throughout preseason camp.
