August 07, 2021 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Ludvig Aberg is set to compete at the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship as the No. 3-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. A rising junior at Texas Tech, Aberg is making his second U.S. Amateur Championship appearance and is coming off finishing as the runner-up at the European Amateur Championship in June.
Aberg begins the tournament at 1:05 p.m. on Monday in a top-ranked pairing with No. 1 Keita Nakajima (China) and No. 2 Pierceson Coody (USA). The trio of the top-three players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking will play the Oakmont Country Club course on Monday before playing the Longue Vue Club course in their second round on Tuesday. The tournament has 312 players in the field and will battle it out throughout the week with the 36-hole championship match to be played on August 15. The winner of the U.S. Amateur earns an exemption to play in the 2022 U.S. Open, 2022 Open Championship and a likely invitation to play in the 2022 Masters Tournament.
Monday and Tuesday will be stroke play before the field is cut to 64 players who will begin match play.
Aberg, who is from Eslov, Sweden, advanced to the 2019 Round of 16 before his freshman season but did not play in last year's event. He is coming off an All-America sophomore season for the Red Raiders where he finished eighth individually at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona after earning championships at The Prestige and The Thunderbird Collegiate during the season and taking first at the Jones Cup Invitational before the official collegiate season. He finished fourth overall at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and the Big 12 Championship.
Texas Tech is set to begin its 2021-22 season next month with a trip to Pebble Beach to play in The Carmel Cup on Sept. 3-5. The Red Raiders will play four fall tournaments, including the Maridoe Collegiate and Blessings Collegiate before the Big 12 Match Play Tournament (Oct. 11-13).
