Aberg Shoots 77 in Opening Round of U.S. Amateur Championship

VERONA, Pennsylvania – Ludvig Aberg opened the U.S. Amateur Championship with round of 7-over-par on Monday at the Oakmont Country Club. Aberg, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, will look to battle back and make the cut of 64 following Tuesday's round.
Aberg is currently tied for 215th and will begin his second round at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday at the Longue Vue Club. The field is split between Oakmont and Longue Vue the first two days of stroke play and has proved to be a divided field. The leaders all came from playing Longue Vue, including Jacob Bridgeman who leads the tournament at 7-under. The lowest score at Oakmont came from Cole Sherwood who shot a 1-under, 69.
Aberg is coming off a runner-up finish at the European Amateur Championship this summer and finished with a 77 on Monday. He was at 4-over through nine holes with a double on No. 6 and would bogey his final three holes of the day after making his lone birdie on No. 15 – a par 4, 479-yard hole. Aberg will be paired with No. 1 Keita Nakajima and No. 2 Pierceson Coody again on Tuesday as the top-three in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Nakajima also struggled on Monday with a 77 along with Aberg, while Coody shot 5-over.
The tournament will be cut to 64 players after Tuesday's round which will start match play from Wednesday through Sunday. The match play portion will be televised on the Golf Channel, Peacock and NBC. Â
