LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 9-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team begins its season at The Carmel Cup this weekend at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. TTU won the 2019 Carmel Cup team championship by shooting 35-under-par, including a final round of 16-under to run away with the title.Â
The Red Raiders will be represented in the season-opening tournament by Ludvig Aberg, Kyle Hogan, Garrett Martin, Baard Skogen, Calum Scott and Alejandro Pedryc and come into the year at No. 9 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Preseason Poll. Hogan and Aberg are the only players from Texas Tech who were a part of the 2019 tournament champions. TTU is coming off its 19 straight NCAA Tournament appearance where it won the NCAA Albuquerque Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship.
TTU head coach Greg Sands is beginning his 21st season leading the program. He has guided the program to nine NCAA Championship appearances, 19 straight NCAA Regional appearances and 25 tournament wins.
The Pebble Beach Golf Links will play at a par-72, 6,828-yard challenge for the players this weekend. Pairings will be announced later this week and will be posted on Golfstat. Three Red Raiders have won The Carmel Cup individual title with Sandy Scott (2019), Hurly Long (2017) and Fredrik Nilehn (2016) earning the championship. The 54-hole tournament is scheduled for Friday-Sunday with one round per day.Â
Aberg earned all-America honors as a sophomore and enters his junior season at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and atop the Golf Channel's top players in the nation list. A Sweden native, Aberg won two collegiate tournament last season and finished 8th individually at the NCAA National Tournament before finishing as the European Amateur Championship runner-up this season. Aberg finished in the top-10 in 9-of-11 tournaments played last season, including winning The Prestige and Thunderbird Collegiate. He finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA Albuquerque Regional before shooting 1-under in four rounds at the national tournament to take 8th and earn all-America honors. Aberg finished 28th at 3-over in the 2019 Carmel Cup in his first-ever collegiate tournament.
Hogan earned all-America honors in the 2019-20 shortened season and is coming off a year where he was honored with the NCAA Elite 90 Award and the All-Big 12 Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year. Hogan won the Maridoe Collegiate last season to begin the season and earned an exemption to play in the Houston Open. Hogan shot 5-under and finished 13th overall in the 2019 Carmel Cup. Martin begins his junior season after a strong sophomore year where he finished with a 72.4 scoring average. A San Antonio native, Martin recorded four top-10 finishes last season highlighted by a third-place showing at the George Hannon Collegiate in Austin and then finishing ninth at the Thunderbird Collegiate. He earned 10th at the NCAA Alquerque Regional by shooting 6-under.
Skogen is an experience sophomore who played in 13 events as a freshman. A Norway native, Skogen averaged rounds of 73.6 last season and earned 15th at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional where he shot 4-under. He finished the season with four rounds in the 60s, highlighted by a 5-under, 67 in the final round of the Aggie Invitational to move up to 12th on the tournament leaderboard. Scott and Pedryc will be making their Red Raider debuts. Pedryc is a redshirt freshman from Poland, while Scott is a true freshman from Scotland who is the younger brother of Sandy Scott.
The Red Raiders will be competing against No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Vanderbilt, No. 7 Oklahoma, RV TCU, No. 14 Georgia, No. 19 Arkansas and Mississippi State this weekend at Pebble Beach. OSU is ranked No. 2 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Preseason Poll after advancing to the NCAA Championship semifinals last season, while Vanderbilt is No. 6 and Oklahoma is at No. 7 in the poll to make this weekend a tournament with four teams in the top-10.

Long, who shot 69-61-67 (-14) to win the tournament, competed in the Tokyo Olympics this summer where he represented his home country of Germany. Sandy Scott, who is still working through a wrist injury, will not play this week. He is the 2019 individual champion at the Carmel Cup where he finished at 14-under with a final round of 65 (7-under) to help lead the team to the team title.
