LUBBOCK, Texas – For the second-consecutive week, Texas Tech will enter the final round within reach of a team title after the No. 20 Red Raiders combined to shoot 6-over-par over two rounds Monday at the Mercedes-Benz Invitational hosted by the University of Tennessee.
Â
The Red Raiders are just three strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's final round at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville as Tech is in a three-way tie with Miami and Augusta in third place, trailing first-day leaders BYU and the host Volunteers.
Â
Similar to a week ago, head coach JoJo Robertson's team used consistency from many of its veterans in the lineup and then a strong performance from one of its newcomers. Monday that strong showing came from freshman Chelsea Romas, who fired a pair of 1-over 72 rounds to end the day in a tie for 16th overall. Romas combined to shoot 6-under on the course's five par-5 locations alone, which was tied for the lowest combined score among the field.
Â
Amy Taylor, meanwhile, is in contention for medalist honors as well as the team title as the senior signed for a 2-under opening round before finishing even in the afternoon session. She is in sole possession of fifth place on the individual leaderboard, four strokes back of first-day leader Kerstin Fotu of BYU.
Â
Anna Dong is two strokes back of Taylor in a tie for seventh place following a 1-under opening round and a 1-over card. Dong notched 10 birdies between the two rounds, which ranked third among the 90-player field. She drained four of those birdies over her final nine holes in the second round, taking advantage of two par-5 locations while making a pair of challenging putts after strong approaches at the par-3 12th and 14th holes.
Â
Gala Dumez and Chiara Horder rounded out the Tech lineup as Dumez was 6-over between the two rounds, while Horder was 11-over on the day. Horder previously was Tech's leader just a week ago with a fifth-place finish at the Sam Golden Invitational in Denton.
Â
The Red Raiders will be paired with BYU and Tennessee on Tuesday when the final round tees off with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at www.Golfstat.com.
