Former South Oak Cliff head coach will be recognized Thursday evening by Dallas ISD
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Emmett Jones will be honored Thursday evening during a scheduled meeting of the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees.
Jones, the former head coach at South Oak Cliff in Dallas from 2012-14, will be recognized with a special proclamation in his name from District 5 trustee and Second Vice President for Dallas ISD, Maxie Johnson.
In his letter detailing reasons for the proclamation, Johnson stated the following: "Words cannot express the work that you have done by bringing a winning culture and climate to South Oak Cliff High School. Black boys who never thought they would be able to go to college, play ball and receive an education have been able to do so because of your leadership and vision. Even after your departure, that winning culture on and off the field continues to this day.
"Coach Jones, you have saved kids' lives in the Southern Sector of Dallas," Johnson continued. "Inner-city kids are walking out their dreams, and we owe you for that."
South Oak Cliff was a combined 30-8 during Jones' three seasons where the Golden Bears advanced deep in the Class 4A and 5A playoffs each year. In the process, South Oak Cliff became a magnet for the top collegiate programs in the country, who, in turn, signed a number of student-athletes each year, including five to the Division-I level in the 2014 class alone.
"We are so proud that Coach Jones is going to be recognized for his incredible tenure at South Oak Cliff," head coach Joey McGuire said. "Since the first time I met him, it's always been about the players with Coach Jones. He is truly a players-first coach who cares about the relationships he builds with his athletes both on and off the field. He built a winning culture at South Oak Cliff that lives today through its run to the state title this past season."
South Oak Cliff was the first head coaching position for Jones after making several stops as an assistant in the DFW area. Jones previously spent seven seasons at nearby Dallas Skyline High School prior to his arrival at South Oak Cliff. He began his tenure at Skyline as wide receivers coach before late being promoted to offensive coordinator.
Jones joined the Texas Tech staff in 2015, first as Director Player Development before being promoted to wide receivers coach from 2016-18. He returned to Lubbock to be part of McGuire's charter staff this December following three seasons at Kansas.
