After earning three points in the morning, Tech leads Iowa State 1-0 after play was halted
HOUSTON – The No. 1 seeded and ranked Texas Tech men's golf program cruised past TCU (5-1) Monday morning and leads Iowa State 1-0 after 14 holes, after Day One of the 2022 Big 12 Match Play event hosted by Houston Oaks.
When play was suspended due to darkness, the Red Raiders led in four of the five remaining matches. Memphis transfer Tyran Snyders has the most commanding lead, a four-up advantage with just four holes to play.
Freshman Matthew Comegys has Tech's second-largest lead, a two-up edge over Iowa State's Kyo Morishita.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Originally scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start, play was delayed until just before 10 a.m. due to poor conditions.
With play finally started, the Red Raiders shook off a slow start to cruise to victory. Comegys got the party started for the Red Raiders cruising to a 5&4 victory. The Texan did not lose a hole during the opening round putting the first point on the board for Tech.
Top-ranked amateur Ludvig Aberg quickly doubled the Red Raiders lead when he secured an equally as dominant 6&4 victory.
Snyders' found some momentum late in his match during Monday's first session, winning the final two holes and three of the last four to put Tech's third full point on the board.
The win clinched the overall team victory and the three full three points for Tech. The result was assured by senior Jack Wall's one up lead with one hole to play. In the end, Wall ended up halving the final hole. The result secured the full point and gave Tech a 4-0 lead.
Down by two shots with just two holes to play, sophomore Calum Scott recorded individual victories on the first and second holes to secure another half point.
The sixth and final match between senior Baard Skogen and Chris Berzina of TCU was also halved, as Berzina used a birdie on 18 to secure the second half point for the Horned Frogs. The six matches resulted in a 5-1 ultimate victory for Tech.
In the afternoon session, the Red Raiders again shook off a slower start to seize control of their match against Iowa State.
After overcoming the two-shot deficit in the opening session to earn a half point, Scott cruised in Monday's afternoon session, winning 5&4. The sophomore won the first holes and three of the first seven, dropping just two total holes the entire match.
As he did in the morning, Comegys continued his strong play as of late and leads by two holes. The freshman lost just one of the 32 holes that were finished Monday.
Tech's final two leads by Aberg and Skogen are one-up. Skogen led by as many as three holes midway through session two, but dropped the 12th and 13th holes. Aberg also led by three shots, winning the first three holes.
After Iowa State's Lucas Gutschewski tied the match by winning holes five through seven, Aberg rebounded to win the 10th and 12th holes. Gutschewski rallied for a victory on 15 to cut the lead back to one.
Play will resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. sharp.
