November 28, 2022 | Women's Basketball
The Lady Raiders have now received Freshman of the Week in back-to-back weeks
IRVING, Texas – Fresh off her first career 20-point performance and after averaging 17 points and 7 rebounds, freshman Jasmine Shavers has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week the conference announced Monday.
After setting a new career-high of 13 points on Friday, Shavers exploded for 21 points in her first career start on Saturday.
For the week, the Mesquite native averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds, shooting 9-of-20 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3-point range. In addition to strong shooting from the field, Shavers made 12-of-15 free throws she attempted.
Shavers joins teammate Bailey Maupin who was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week last week. Today's honor marks just the third time in school history that Tech has had two different players win Freshman of the Week (1997, 2003) and just the second time that Tech has had back-to-back freshmen of the week. The last time it happened was the 2003-04 season when Erin Grant and LaToya Davis went back-to-back (Jan. 6, Jan. 13).
The Lady Raiders closed play at the Las Vegas Invitational 2-0 after defeating both Middle Tennessee and Mercer.
Winners of four straight, the Lady Raiders open an eight-game homestand on Thursday against Alabama State. Tip-off from United Supermarkets Arena is set for 7 p.m.
