LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is signing a highly-ranked recruit to the 2023-24 class after adding Jermine Sherif to the Red Raiders' women's tennis team, announced by head coach Adam Herendeen on Wednesday.
"We knew from the first time we spoke with Jermine that she was going to be a perfect fit here at Texas Tech! Not only does she bring great experience from playing in the top international tournaments, but she is also going to be a great addition to the culture that we are growing," Herendeen said. "She is excited to be a Red Raider and we cannot wait to help her continue in her development!"
Currently ranked No. 145 in juniors, Sherif is a two-time ITF singles champion and six-time ITF doubles champion.
Sherif first won the J5 Cairo singles title in May 2021 when she picked up five-straight victories, including one over top-200 player Roisin Gilheany, to claim the title. She also never dropped a set in the tournament en route to her first title.
The Cairo, Egypt native won her second ITF singles title at J3 Cairo, only losing one set in the entire competition. She also took down multiple top-800 WTA players in two-straight Cairo 15k tournaments to advance out of qualifying and into the main draws.
Since the beginning of 2021, Sherif has made it to six singles finals, five semifinals and five quarterfinals on the junior circuit.
In doubles, the future Red Raider claimed two titles in 2020, three in 2021 and another in 2022. Her most recent doubles trophy came at JB2 Sousse when she and partner Layla Shoukry took down four teams to win the title.
Sherif is the No. 1-ranked under 18 player in Egypt, the No. 2-ranked under 18 player in Africa and boasts a career-high ITF juniors ranking of 120.
She trains at the Stars Tennis Academy in Cairo and attends the Akhnaton American International School where she is coached by Mostafa Naim. Set to graduate school in June 2023, Sherif also competes in swimming.
