LUBBOCK, Texas – Amy Taylor continued her strong play to start Texas Tech's spring slate Monday, signing for a pair of 4-under-par 68 cards to move into a tie for the individual lead at the ICON Invitational held at the Golf Club of Houston.
Taylor, who was the runner-up last week at the Columbia Classic in Florida, is one of three players tied atop the leaderboard at 8-under for the tournament as she shares the opening-day lead with the USC duo of Cindy Kou and Amari Avery. Taylor's runner-up showing was previously her highest finish of her career.
Taylor drained nine birdies on the day and had only one bogey, which came at the par-4 5th during the opening round. She sank five birdies over her first eight holes to start the tournament and then went bogey-free over the second round to pair with four birdies.
As a team, the Red Raiders are tied for fourth overall after combining to shoot 3-over 579 over the two rounds to move into a three-way tie with both Texas A&M and Houston. Texas Tech wrapped the opening round at even-par 288 before responding with a 3-over card later in the day.
Gala Dumez and Chiara Horder both chipped in consecutive 2-over 74 cards to end the day in a tie for 38th overall, two strokes ahead of Chelsea Romas in a tie for 51st. Romas was even over her first 18 holes Monday thanks in part to three birdies over her first four holes and then was 6-over in the afternoon round. Anna Dong rounded out the lineup at 9-over and in a tie for 64th individually.
USC ran away with the opening-day lead, finishing 25-under as team to control a 16-stroke advantage over second place Illinois. The Illini are one stroke ahead of Oklahoma State in third place. The Red Raiders have a two-stroke advantage over Purdue in seventh followed by Tennessee in eighth at 6-over and Maryland at 9-over.
Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start with live coverage provided throughout the day at Golfstat.com.
