Red Raiders set for Cabo Collegiate

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 6 Texas Tech men's golf team returns to competition at the Cabo Collegiate on Sunday at the Cabo del Sol – Cove Club Course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Red Raiders will be represented this week by Ludvig Aberg, Baard Skogen, Garrett Martin, Calum Scott and Andy Lopez.
TTU will be competing against a strong 14-team field that includes No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 16 Ole Miss, No. 20 Alabama, No. 28 Arizona, Baylor, Cal, Florida State, Houston and Rice. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday and finishes with the championship round on Tuesday. Tech will be paired with Arizona State, Stanford and Baylor during its opening round.
The Red Raiders are coming off finishing fourth last week at The Prestige in California after opening the spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii to begin the month. Aberg won The Prestige after shooting 3-under at the PGA West Course in La Quinta, California. A junior from Sweden, Aberg has now won three collegiate tournaments in his career and is at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and 78th in the Golfstat rankings. He shot 71-69-70 – 210 under tough weather conditions in the third event of the season.
Skogen finished as the Amer Ari runner-up and is at No. 7 in the Golfstat ratings. Skogen finished 59th last week at The Prestige. In the fall season, Skogen was the runner-up at the Maridoe Collegiate and also finished 10th at The Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach. A sophomore from Norway, Skogen is currently averaging rounds of 71.2 through five stroke-play events this season. Martin finished sixth at the Amer Ari in Hawaii by shooting 68-67-67 – 202 for his strongest showing of his junior season to date, while Scott was 15th in Hawaii and 33rd in California.
Lopez played in The Prestige individual tournament last week, finishing tied for fifth after shooting 74-73-70 – 217 after finishing 45th in Hawaii as part of the team score. A senior from Plano, Lopez has played in two of the five tournaments this season.
Tech played in the Cabo Collegiate for the first time in program history last season in an event that was moved to San Antonio due to the pandemic. Oklahoma won the tournament followed by Florida State and Texas A&M at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course. TAMU's Sam Bennett won the individual title.
The Red Raiders will follow this week's event in Mexico with a couple of weeks off before returning to competition at the Valspar Collegiate from March 28-29 in Palm City, Florida before playing in the Aggie Invitational (April 9-10) in College Station and Thunderbird Collegiate from April 15-16 in Phoenix. The Big 12 Championship is scheduled for April 25-27 in Trinity, Texas which will lead into the NCAA Tournament.
