The Red Raiders move to 0-6 against ranked opponents this season.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Texas Tech softball (4-9) dropped a pair of one-run contests to No. 16 Missouri (10-3) and No. 6 UCLA (9-3) Friday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Tech fell 2-1 to Missouri on a walk off infield single in the first game before dropping another 2-1 game to UCLA.
Texas Tech 1, #16 Missouri 2
The Red Raiders had a scoring opportunity in the top of the second when Payton Jackson drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a Jacee Hamlin single. Jackson was thrown out at home attempting to score on a passed ball but was tagged out by the pitcher.
Mizzou threatened in the bottom of the third after a leadoff walk and bunt single put two runners on base with no outs. The Red Raider defense worked out of the jam, retiring the next three batters, capped off by Erna Carlin's fourth strikeout of the game.
Tech finally broke through in the top of the fifth on a sac fly from Riley Love that scored Abbie Orrick. Orrick doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a deep fly out from Hamlin. Love sent the first pitch of the at bat to deep to the right fielder, allowing Orrick to tag to put the Red Raiders up 1-0.
The Tigers responded with a run of their own to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. A one-out double put a runner in scoring position for Brooke Wilmes who singled through the right side to bring in the run, ending Carlin's day. Olivia Rains entered the game in relief and after a single, a strikeout and a walk faced a bases loaded situation. Rains forced a ground out to end the inning, keeping the game tied at 1-1.
The Red Raiders put the go-ahead run in scoring position in the top of the seventh when Jackson walked for the second time and moved to second on a passed ball but Tech was unable to bring in the run, as Laurin Krings struck out her 14th batter of the game to end the inning.
Mizzou opened the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single and moved the runner into scoring position with a ground out to first. A groundout to second put the winning run 60 feet away for Kara Daly who hit a ball deep to Villa who fielded the ball cleanly but could not get the throw to first in time for the walk off hit.
Tech managed just three hits against Krings (4-1), whose 14 strikeouts were the most against the Red Raiders since Jessica Jarecki of Colorado State struck out 14 in last year's season opener.
Carlin held her own against the Mizzou order for 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five. Rains (0-2) pitched 2.1 innings in relief giving up one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Texas Tech 1, #6 UCLA 2
UCLA opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run. The Bruins looked to make it 2-0 as Maya Brady sent a ball deep to right field, but Jackson reached over the wall to bring it back in and keep it a one run game.
Peyton Blythe belted her first home run of the season to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the third. Blythe took a 2-0 pitch to right center field for the Red Raiders first hit of the ballgame.
The Bruins used small ball to regain the lead in the bottom of the third with three straight bunts to bring in a runner, making it 2-1. Kelli Godin led off with a bunt and stole second to get into scoring position. She moved to third on a bunt from Briana Perez, who took second on the play. Savannah Pola successfully laid down a squeeze to bring in Godin from third before a strikeout ended the inning.
Tech put two runners in scoring position in the fourth as Carson Armijo and Jackson recorded back-to-back one-out base hits. They moved to second and third on a passed ball, but a couple of fly outs ended the scoring threat.
The score would hold for the rest of the game as the sixth-ranked Bruins walked away with a 2-1 win.
Megan Faraimo (4-1) went the distance for UCLA allowing one run on four hits while striking out 12.
Kendall Fritz (3-3) pitched all six innings for the Red Raiders giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
