PREVIEW
The Red Raiders look to bounce back after a difficult weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational where Tech went 0-6 against programs that were ranked or receiving votes.
After lopsided losses to Auburn and Clemson, the Red Raiders started to find their footing, hitting four home runs in a 9-6 loss to Northwestern before falling in extras to UCF later that night. Saturday the Red Raiders put together their best performance of the weekend, holding their own against No. 6 Washington, dropping a 1-0 contest against the Huskies. Tech held the sixth-ranked team to its fewest hits all season as the Red Raiders outhit the Huskies 7-2 but left 10 runners on base. Tech closed out the tournament with another close contest, falling 2-0 against No. 21 LSU.
Tech will face three more ranked opponents this weekend in No. 16 Missouri, No. 6 UCLA and a rematch with No. 18 Northwestern.
The Red Raiders open the tournament Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT against California Baptist (5-5). This will mark the first meeting between the two programs. California Baptist moved from Division II to Division I in 2018, competing in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
Tech will face a pair of ranked opponents on Friday, first against Missouri (8-3) at 7:30 p.m. CT and against UCLA (7-3) at 10:00 p.m. CT. The Red Raiders face their former Big 12 foes for the first time since the Tigers left the conference at the end of the 2011 season. Tech is 12-26 all-time against Mizzou. In the nightcap the Red Raiders square off with the UCLA Bruins for the fifth time and first time in 20 years. UCLA has won all four previous matchups, the last coming in 2002.
Saturday the Red Raiders will meet Long Beach State (2-7) at 2:30 p.m. CT. Tech and LBSU met most recently in 2018 as the Red Raiders fell to the Beach 2-4 in Long Beach.
The Red Raiders close the MNCC with a rematch against Northwestern (7-2), after playing the Wildcats last weekend in Clearwater. Though the Wildcats got the better of the Red Raiders in that contest, Tech blasted four home runs, two from Arriana Villa. Northwestern leads the series 4-2.
