Tech earned a pair of 4-0 victories Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis program used strong days from Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova to earn a pair of 4-0 sweeps over West Virginia and UTRGV Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
With the two victories, Texas Tech (13-7, 3-3 Big 12) completed a perfect 4-0 weekend. The Lady Raiders began the weekend with an epic 4-2 win over No. 28 Iowa State, before closing with three sweeps, including Saturday's 4-0 sweep over Denver.
And while Tech got contributions up and down its roster on Sunday, including an appearance on court six from Lubbock native Camryn Stepp, it was Komac and Sayfetdinova who stole the show Sunday.
Komac went a perfect 3-0 on Sunday, and didn't drop a set. She and doubles partner Olivia Peet were up 5-3 in their first doubles match against WVU, before rebounding for a tidy 6-0 win in Sunday's nightcap.
For the weekend, Komac was a perfect 4-0 in singles play, including an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Momoko Nagato of WVU. Komac won her second match Sunday afternoon 6-0, 6-2. For the weekend, Komac won all eight singles sets she played.
Other highlight's Sunday included Sayfetdinova's strong day, as the freshman closed a perfect 7-0 weekend. The lone match Sayfetdinova did not win was Friday's singles match that was called with the Russian up 5-3 in the third set.
On Sunday, Sayfetdinova won a 6-2, 6-1 against WVU before clinching the victory over the Vaqueros with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Sayfetdinova is now unbeaten in her last six matches (four wins, two unfinished.)
In her first singles action since Jan. 16, Stepp won the opening set 6-4 before her match was unfinished.
Tech won 16 of 17 singles sets that were completed Sunday and did not drop a doubles match.
HEAD COACH TODD PETTY:
"When you have two matches in one day, it's always good to get on and off the court quickly. We didn't let leads slip like we had done recently, and we did a good job of holding onto our leads. This was a toughness day for our team and was probably the hottest day we've had [temperatures were in the upper 80s] all year. We did a good job of finishing off matches, and then it was great to get Cam some match experience being that she's a local kid. She handled herself extremely well. I'm just happy that we went undefeated on the weekend which was big for us."
On next weekend's matches against No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 3 Oklahoma:
"We'll face two great teams that are both ranked inside the top-15. Oklahoma just beat Texas today and have just one loss all year. They're going to be top of the Big 12 standings after this weekend and they're on top for a reason. They're a great program playing really well. Both matches provide a big opportunity for us to face two top-10 caliber programs. We can play as the underdog a little bit which is the role we like to play."
