Despite winning the doubles point and a win from Metka Komac, Tech fell to OSU
LUBBOCK, Texas – In what turned out to be a nearly three hour and 30-minute thriller, the 27th-ranked Texas Tech women's tennis program fell to No. 11 Oklahoma State, 4-2 Friday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (13-8, 3-4 Big 12) got off to a dream start Friday, as Metka Komac and doubles partner Olivia Peet closed out a 6-3 victory on court three.
After OSU (13-3, 4-1 Big 12) answered with a identical 6-3 victory on court two, Avelina Sayfetdinova and Kailey Evans downed 14th-ranked Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto 6-4 to seal the doubles point.
The Cowgirls opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court five to even the score, but Tech and Komac quickly answered with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory on court four. Komac's victory over No. 104 Oona Orpana was her fifth straight singles victory and her team leading 17th of the season.
No. 24 Margarita Skriabina shook off a tough 6-1 setback in the opening set to record a tidy 6-2 victory in set two. In set number three, No. 42 Lisa Marie Rioux rode a fast start to a 6-1 victory.
Olivia Peet won the opening set over 30th-ranked Mhai Sawangkaew and was up a break multiple times in the second set, before falling in the decisive third set.
Needing to win both of the final two singles points of the night, No. 85 Sayfetdinova won a second-set tiebreaker over No. 22 Martina Zerulo of OSU, before ultimately falling 2-6 in the final set.
Freshman Cristina Tiglea shook off an opening-set tiebreaker setback to win the second set and was up 5-4 in set three when the match was decided.
The Lady Raiders saw their eight-match home winning streak snapped and a four-match winning streak come to an end.
HEAD COACH TODD PETTY:
"Give Oklahoma State credit they were the better team today. We can't lose four or five sets, 6-0 or 6-1 as a team, and expect to win. If you do that good teams are going to run away with it. But I was proud of the fight and the grit we showed. We forced five third sets against one of the best teams in the country, but we just need to find a way to win the big points better. But I feel like we were right there."
On flipping the page to Sunday's match against No. 3 Oklahoma:
"We just have to learn from today's result. I told them before the match that we were going to put ourselves in a position to win on every court, and we did that today. We'll do the same on Sunday. Oklahoma is unbelievably talented and good, but I have a lot of belief in this team. We just need to learn from today and put ourselves in a position, and be a little bit tougher at the right time"
