The Lady Raiders rode the momentum from doubles to a trio of singles sweeps
FORT WORTH – The No. 28 ranked Texas Tech women's tennis program overcame a slow start Saturday afternoon to sweep the TCU Horned Frogs, 4-0 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
After No. 58 Avelina Sayfetdinova and Kailey Evans dropped the first doubles match, Texas Tech (14-9, 4-5 Big 12) was locked in a pair of battles on court three and five.
Metka Komac and doubles partner Olivia Peet recorded a clutch 7-5 win on court five, while Cristina
Tiglea and Margarita Skriabina sealed the doubles point just a couple of minutes later with an identical 7-5 victory.
In singles action, No. 89 Sayfetdinova quickly doubled Tech's lead, cruising to a straight-set (6-4, 6-1) victory on court three.
Just moments later, Metka Komac brought Texas Tech to within one point of clinching the match when she sealed her 16th singles victory of the season, 6-2/6-3.
Needing just one point to clinch a crucial Big 12 victory, Tech turned Tiglea, who closed out a dominant two and one victory on court six.
With the victory, Tech closes the regular tied with No. 29 Kansas for fifth place in the final Big 12 standings. Iowa State sits just one-half game behind the Jayhawks and Lady Raiders, and will close the regular season against West Virginia on Sunday.
If the Cyclones are victorious, they will move into a three-way tie with Tech and KU, and the three-way tie will be broken on Monday based on the final ITA rankings of the regular season. If WVU upsets ISU,
Kansas will finish fifth and Tech will finish sixth, based on the head-to-head victory by KU earlier in the season.
UP NEXT:
Tech will turn its attention to postseason play, as the Big 12 Championships await next week. If Texas Tech receives the fifth seed, they will face No. 4 Baylor on Friday. No. 3 Texas will be the Lady Raiders first opponent of the championships on Friday, if Tech finishes sixth. If seventh, Tech will face WVU on Thursday. The Big 12 Championships will be hosted by TCU, April 21-24.
