Birdsell picks up second Big 12 weekly award
April 25, 2022 | Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Texas Tech junior right-hander Brandon Birdsell was named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It is Birdsell's second Pitcher of the Week award of the 2022 season.
Birdsell tossed an eight-inning complete game in the Red Raiders' dominant 12-2 run-rule (8) victory against West Virginia in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The junior did not allow an earned run, limited the Mountaineers to four hits, and struck out nine while walking just one batter. The start marked the longest outing of his Texas Tech career.
It would have been the first complete game of the season had Andrew Morris not tossed one of his own in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. It was the first time since 2009 that Texas Tech tossed back-to-back complete games. On April 11, 2009, both A.J. Ramos and Chad Bettis threw complete games.
Earlier this season, Birdsell was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 14 after striking out 15 batters in a six-inning no-hitter at Rice.
Texas' Ivan Melendez (Player), Oklahoma State's Justin Campbell (Co-Pitcher) and Oklahoma's Blake Robertson (Newcomer) were also selected for Big 12 baseball weekly awards by a five-person media panel, through games of April 24.
