LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 7-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team returns to competition this weekend at the Aggie Invitational which is being played at the Traditions Club in Bryan-College Station.
The Red Raiders will be represented by Ludvig Aberg, Baard Skogen, Sandy Scott, Calum Scott and Andy Lopez at the two-day, 54-hole tournament. The event begins with 36 holes of continuous play on Saturday followed by the championship round on Sunday which starts at 7:30 a.m. with tee times. Tech will also have a pair of individuals playing with Kyle Hogan and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas competing unattached.
The tournament also features No. 10 Arkansas, No. 23 Texas A&M, Baylor, Houston, Kent State, Little Rock, Louisville, New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Illinois and UTSA. The Jack Nicklaus designed course is set up at a par-72, 7,227-yard layout this weekend. Â
Tech has played in 13 straight Aggie Invitationals dating back to 2005 and will be looking to win its first title at the event. The Red Raiders have had one player win the individual title with Oscar Floren winning the 2006 tournament at 7-under with a 75-68-66 – 209 scorecard. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 and in 2019 due to weather. Â
The Red Raiders finished fourth last season at 9-over, while the Aggies won their home event in a playoff over Oklahoma after finishing at 2-over. Lopez and Aberg earned top-10 finishes with both at 1-over for a sixth-place showing. Aberg comes into the tournament this season at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and at No. 8 in the Golfstat playing ranking after finishing third at the Valspar Collegiate in Florida last week. A junior from Sweden, Aberg won The Prestige in mid-February before taking fifth at the Cabo Collegiate a week later. He also played in the PGA's Valero Texas Open last weekend at TPC San Antonio.
Skogen heads to the Aggie Invitational at No. 30 in the Golfweek rankings and No. 41 by Golfstat. A sophomore from Norway, Skogen is coming off a 22nd-place showing at the Valspar Collegiate after taking 20th at the Cabo. He has two runner-up finishes this season, first at the Maridoe Collegiate in the fall before opening the fall with at The Amer Ari by shooting 66-65-68 during his three rounds in Hawaii. Sandy Scott will be playing for the second straight tournament after also competing at the Valspar which was his first event since an injury at the 2020 Maridoe Collegiate Invite. A two-time All-American, Sandy's scoring averages of 70.2 in the 2018-19 season and 70.5 (2019-20) are the second and third best in program history. Along with his collegiate career, Sandy Scott has played in the Walker Cup and the U.S. Open.
Texas A&M's Sam Bennett is the defending individual champion at the event after shooting 6-under last year. He is current at No. 3 in the Golfstat individual rankings this season.
As a team, Tech is currently at No. 7 in the Golfstat rankings, No. 9 in the Golfweek ratings and at No. 8 in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. The Aggie Invitational will lead into the Red Raiders playing in their final regular-season event at the Thunderbird Collegiate on April 15-16 in Phoenix. The events lead into the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas from April 25-27 before the NCAA Tournament.
