Red Raiders challenged on opening day of NCAA Championships
May 27, 2022 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Texas Tech will go into the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship tied for 19th after shooting 17-over-par during Friday's afternoon wave at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
Ludvig Aberg leads the Red Raiders at 1-over after posting a 71 during the first day of the tournament, while Baard Skogen is 3-over, Sandy Scott is 5-over followed by Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas (78) and Andy Lopez (79). Texas Tech will return to the course for a 9 a.m. (CST) start on Saturday for the second round. The Red Raiders are once again paired with Texas and Florida.
"The golf course played tough and we didn't quite have the scores to be where we wanted to be after the first round," Tech coach Greg "We have the morning wave tomorrow and need to take advantage of better conditions. I think if we play like we're capable of and use what we learned about the course today that I will shake out the way we need to. Our team just has to keep moving forward. I've told the guys to keep grinding all season and they've done a great job with that. I expect the same in the morning."
Vanderbilt leads the tournament at 2-over followed by Oregon and Auburn who are both at 5-over.
Aberg will go into the second round in 16th place and three strokes back of Harry Hiller (Kansas) and Brendan Valdez (Auburn) who lead the tournament at 2-under. Aberg went on a run on the back-9 with three straight birdies to get back into contention.
"It was important for him and the team to get going like he did," said Sands of Aberg. "He had a couple of other holes where he just missed setting himself up for even better opportunities that could have led to an even better day. It was good that he got it going there for his confidence. The first nine he would admit wasn't to his standard but he was able to turn it around."
