Aberg advances at U.S. Amateur Championship

PARAMUS, New Jersey – Texas Tech rising senior Ludvig Aberg has advanced to match play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship while Baard Skogen, Sandy Scott and Matthew Comegys missed the cut. Aberg advances by shooting 4-over-par during stroke play with a 74 on Tuesday at Arcola Country Club after he began the tournament with a 71 on Monday at The Ridgewood Country Club.
The Round of 64 is set for Wednesday with tee times from 9 a.m. – 2:10 p.m. followed by Round of 32 and Round of 16 play on Thursday. Pairings for Wednesday's matches will be posted on Tuesday night. The quarterfinals are on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and a 36-hole championship match is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Peacock and Golf Channel will provide coverage throughout the next five days of the event.
Skogen, a rising Tech junior, missed the cut at 12-over after posting rounds of 77-76, while former Red Raider Sandy Scott also didn't advance. Scott shot even-par, 70 on Tuesday but missed the cut after an opening round 79 on Monday. Texas Tech was also represented by incoming freshman Matthew Comegys who missed the cut after rounds of 78-76 (13-over). Aberg is playing in his third U.S. Amateur Championship after also competing in the 2019 and 2021 tournaments. He advanced to the Round of 32 in 2019 before his freshman season and missed the cut last year. Â
Aberg is coming off an All-American junior season where he was named the Ben Hogan Award winner. He won the 2022 Big 12 Championship and was 11th at the NCAA Championships through stroke play. A rising senior from Sweden, Aberg also won The Prestige during his third season at Tech. He is currently at No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and PGA TOUR University rankings. Along with collegiate events, Aberg played in PGA events at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, The RSM Classic and Valero Texas Open within the past year.
Aberg finished fifth this summer at The Amateur Championship in England and also helped the international team to a win at the Arnold Palmer Cup.
Texas Tech is set to begin the 2022-23 season at the Frederica Cup on Sept. 7-8 at St. Simons Island, Georgia. Â
