Three Red Raiders receive Shrine Bowl invites
November 07, 2023 | Football
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's Myles Cole, Steve Linton and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson received invitations on Tuesday to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, should they elect to. The 99th edition of the game will take place on Feb. 1, 2024 at The Star in Frisco, Texas.Â
Texas Tech has been well represented in the East-West Shrine Bowl historically, having 43 Red Raiders represent the program throughout the years. Most recently, Dawson Deaton and DaMarcus Fields accepted invitations to the 2021 East-West Shrine Bowl. Deaton rolled that into being drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns while Fields had suitors as an undrafted free agent and signed with the New Orleans Saints after the draft.
The 2023 edition began identifying prospects prior to training camps beginning as the organization announced its annual Shrine Bowl 1,000 list, which featured 18 different Red Raiders as top candidates to possibly appear in the nation's oldest college football all-star game. This week's wave of invites was the first round with the potential for additional invitations in the future.Â
Linton and Taylor-Demerson both have previously earned weekly awards from the East-West Shrine Bowl this season. Taylor-Demerson was honored as the "Breakout Defensive Player of the Week" for the East-West Shrine Bowl after his two-interception performance on Nov. 2 versus TCU. It's announced every Monday, and is given out to an all-star game-eligible defensive player who displayed the most NFL traits that week. Meanwhile, Linton was named the "Texas Star of the Week" for the East-West Shrine Bowl following the three sacks he tabbed at Baylor on Oct. 7. It's announced every Tuesday, and is given out to an all-star game-eligible player from a Texas university that displayed the most NFL traits that week.
Of the three, Cole and Taylor-Demerson will have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, respectively, after the season. Linton may choose to opt-in for his final year of eligibility if he elects to, an additional year granted by the 2020 COVID season.
Approximately 130 college football players from 100 universities will compete in the game and showcase their skills in front of NFL scouts and a national television audience. The game will be televised nationally on NFL Network. It will be the first time the game has been played in the DFW Metroplex.Â
