Tech, Ludvig Aberg lead by three strokes
PALM CITY, Fla. – Powered by a pair of strong rounds from Ludvig Aberg and a strong second round 64 from junior Tyran Snyders, the Texas Tech Red Raiders enjoy a three-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Valspar Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Houston at Floridian National Golf Club. Aberg also enjoys a three-shot 36 hole lead after day one.
In what turned out to a pretty typical performance from the World's second-ranked amateur, Aberg fired rounds of 65 and 67 Monday to enjoy a three-shot lead heading into tomorrow's third and final round. His opening round 65 tied the second-lowest round of his illustrious career. The Swede's lowest career round was a 63 during the final round of the 2022 Cabo Intercollegiate.
Aberg started the day with a bang, shooting an opening nine 31, to fire the opening round 65 that featured seven birdies and just one bogey. In the second round Monday, Aberg nearly equaled his opening round success, firing a 67, that featured three birdies, an eagle and just one bogey. With his 10 birdies on the afternoon, Aberg now has 410 career birdies in just 104 all-time rounds. That mark is sixth all-time.
The all-time leader in scoring average in program history (70.4), Aberg also recorded his 63rd and 64th career rounds of par or better to move into a third-place tie with Hannes Ronneblad for the third most all-time. Aberg has now shot par or better in an astounding 64 of his 104 all-time rounds (61.5 percent)
With a victory tomorrow, Aberg can also record his sixth overall individual victory which would tie him for the all-time mark in program history with former Red Raider Clement Sordet who won six time in 52 starts. Aberg is making just his 34th start this week.
Aberg had help on Monday, as a pair of teammates also joined him near the top of the leaderboard. A transfer from Memphis, Snyders shook off an opening round 72 (+1) to fire the career-best second round 64. The junior birdied five straight holes and six of his final seven to fire a bogey-free 30 (-6) back nine. Snyders sits tied for fifth at -6 overall.
Sophomore Calum Scott also closed business on Monday inside the top-10 after firing a 36-hole score of -5. Scott is currently tied for eighth.
As a team, Tech sits at -18, three shots clear over No. 4 UNC (-15). No. 7 Florida State sits at -10 to enjoy solo third followed by No. 2 Arizona State (-9).
No. 10 Texas and Ohio State sit tied for fifth at -5, followed by No. 14 Texas A&M (-4) and host Houston (E). No. 18 Georgia Southern (+1) and No. 26 Northwestern (+3) round out the top-10.
Wake Forest, Duke and No. 9 Pepperdine all sit tied for 11th at +4, followed by Marquette (+9), Minnesota (+16) and Lamar (+27).
Aberg sits three shots clear of Wolfgang Glawe (Houston), David Ford (UNC) and Ben Carr (Georgia Southern) who are tied for second at -7.
