Red Raiders are now 2-0-1 in spring matches
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Powered by Penelope Mulenga's second-half goal, Texas Tech picked up its second spring win after downing New Mexico, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex.
After the Red Raiders and Lobos went toe-to-toe in the opening 45 minutes, Mulenga handed Tech the decisive 1-0 lead, firing a strike from the top of the 18-yard-box.
"It was another quality spring game to get us ready for the fall," head coach Tom Stone said. "New Mexico plays with a lot of purpose and are extremely well coached and well organized. We were pleased to get the win, but our overall performance demonstrated the amount of ground we still need to cover before summer."
Tech's best look of the first half came as Kaitlyn Giametta rocketed a ball that would tip off the cross bar. After Mulenga's goal early in the second half, she saw yet another chance, heading a cross just over the bar.
Hannah Anderson kept the Red Raider defense locked down in the waning minutes as New Mexico increased the pressure. Anderson cleared a late service into the box with a header to keep the Lobos at-bay and secure the win.
As she has done in all three spring matches, Madison White held New Mexico scoreless, seeing all 90 minutes in net, and earning her third straight shutout.
The Red Raiders will take the upcoming weekend off from spring matches before taking on New Mexico State on Saturday, April 15. Kick off from the John Walker Soccer Complex is set for 1 p.m.
