April 13, 2023 | Track and Field
The Red Raiders will be represented in three time zones this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – From the eastern coast to the western coast, and in between, the Texas Tech track and field team readies for a busy weekend across the country as Tech continues its third-straight weekend on the road.
Out west, TTU will have its distance and jumps crew over in the Bryan Clay Invitational and Long Beach State Invitational. The throws squad travels to Norman, Okla., for the Sooner Invitational, while sprints, middle distance and pole vault groups head to the Gainesville, Fla., for the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.
Last Time Out
Tech traveled a select group to Tucson, Arizona for the Jim Click Shootout. From the throws side of things, Malin Smith walked away the discus winner throwing a PB mark of 57.84m (189-9) to put her No. 8 in the Tech record book and No. 9 in the country. Her final heave of 57.73m (189-5) put her No. 10 all-time for Tech.
Rankings
The Texas Tech men's track and field team held its spot at No. 4 for a second consecutive week in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings released Monday afternoon.
On The Lookout
It's almost safe to say that the Tom Jones Memorial meet hosted by Florida will be the most competitive meet in the nation this week as it features several top ranked programs. On the men's side, four of the top-5 teams will be attendance, while two of the top-5 represent the women's side.
Terrence Jones will look to debut in the 100m this weekend as he ran the event for the first time collegiately at last year's Tom Jones. The. Red Raiders will also look to post a strong time in the men's 4x100 and 4x400. The women's side is still looking for their first 4x100 mark of the season.
In Norman, the entire throws crew will be in full action as they get an early preview of the 2023 Big 12 Outdoor Championships site.
