HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Battling windy and unfavorable conditions, No. 5 Texas Tech men's golf sits in solo third after 36 holes of play at the Big 12 Championships hosted by Oklahoma State at Prairie Dunes Golf Club.
The story of the day for the Red Raiders was Aberg, who turned an opening round 67 and a second round 66. Aberg flirted with going lower during Monday's second round, as the top-ranked amateur in the world was -5 for the round on multiple occasions.
Aberg got off to a mixed start using three birdies in his first seven holes to sit at -2 for the championship, before moving back down to even par after a double-bogey six on the par four eighth. On the back nine of the opening round, the 2021 individual medalist turned it on using birdies on 10, 17 and 18 to card a bogey-free 32 enroute to the 67.
Starting on the back-nine during round two, Aberg carried the momentum from round one, using three birdies and an eagle two in the final five holes to make the turn in just 30 strokes.
On the final nine holes, the No. 1 ranked player in the PGA TOUR U rankings recorded a pair of birdies and two bogeys to finish the day at -7 overall.
Taking the 36-hole lead into the clubhouse, Aberg ultimately finished two strokes behind Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner who used three straight to birdies to tie the Big 12 record of 64. Baumgartner who also fired an opening round 67 sits at -9 for the championship.
No. 10 Oklahoma fired rounds of 275 (-5) and 279 (-1) to sit atop the leaderboard at -6, 12 shots clear of No. 21 Oklahoma State who sits at +6. The Red Raiders are just four shots behind Oklahoma State at +10, followed by TCU (+16), Texas (+17) and West Virginia (+20).
