Aberg tied the Big 12 single round record with a 63; Tech moved into solo second
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – And that's why it's called moving day.
Battling the high winds and below optimal conditions, senior Ludvig Aberg turned in a performance for the ages, Tuesday afternoon at Prairie Dunes Golf Club, firing a bogey-free round of 63 to erase a two-shot deficit and take a commanding six shot lead.
Pick your superlative, they all apply, as Aberg carved up one of the toughest courses in the country in cold and windy conditions. The heroics set Aberg up to become the first player in Big 12 Conference history to win back-to-back individual medalist honors.
Entering the day trailing by two shots, Aberg flipped the two-shot deficit into a seven shot lead. Aberg's score of 199 through three days would be the lowest three day score in the history of the Big 12 Championship. Aberg needs a 77 or lower on Wednesday to set the lowest four round score in Big 12 Championship history. Morgan Hoffmann (OSU, 2011) and Cole Hammer (UT, 2019) each shot 276.
The day got off to a strong start, as Aberg used birdies on three, six and seven to make the turn at -3 for the day. With the momentum from the strong front nine, Aberg caught fire, firing a back nine 31.
Aberg is now 12-under on the back nine this week, making 10 birdies, an eagle and zero bogeys.
The seniors round of 63 is a new Texas Tech school record at a Big 12 Conference Championship and it also ties the Big 12 Conference Championship record set back in 2016 by Gran Hirschman of Oklahoma. Hirschman shot a nine-under round of 63 at Whispering Pines.
On the backs of the strong day from Aberg, the No. 5 Red Raiders leapfrogged No. 21 Oklahoma State and are now in solo second place heading into tomorrow's fourth and final round.
The Red Raiders are +9 as a team for the week, and trail No. 10 Oklahoma who sits at -2 for the championship.
No. 14 Texas used a strong five-under round of 275 to surge into third, four shots clear of Oklahoma State who sits at +16 for the week.
Tech and UT were the only two schools to shoot under par on Tuesday.
TCU (+18), Kansas (+32), Kansas State (+39), Baylor (+39), West Virginia (+40) and Iowa State (+49) round out the 10-team field.
As previously mention, Aberg leads the event by six strokes over second place Jonas Baumgartner of Oklahoma State. After firing rounds of 67 and 64 to take a two-shot lead into play on Tuesday, Baumgartner fired a two-over round of 72.
After Baumgartner, the next closest competitor is two-under par.
