Red Raiders Sit 16th after Day Two at Grayhawk

The Red Raiders closed the day at +15, end the first two rounds at +17
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Battling a course that featured an average player score of nearly 73.5 (nearly 3.5 strokes above par), the Texas Tech Red Raiders turned in a team score of 295 (+15) to finish Day Two of the NCAA Championships in 16th place (+17).
Grayhawk Golf Club roared to form on Saturday, as the 30-team field combined to shoot almost 270 shots over par on holes one through nine; the entire field of 30 teams plus individuals (157 players) combined for just 293 birdies and recorded one front nine of under par golf (Illinois -1)
In the end, just two of the 18 holes (number two and number four) on the Talon Course finished the day with an average score below par.
With fast and firm greens combined with tough pin placements, the Red Raiders four couniting scores combined to shoot 11 over on the front nine after closing the back nine at four-over.
World Amateur No. 1 Ludvig Aberg got off to a strong start on Saturday using a pair of birdies on 16 and 17 to make the turn at -3 for the week and two under for the day.
After a tough bogey at No. 1, Aberg found trouble on hole number three, when he ended up off the fairway to the left. Aberg ultimately chipped out of the desert landscape and found the green with a chance at double bogey. Abergs' putt came up just a half roll short, as the senior recorded his first triple bogey in nearly two months.
In the end, Aberg, finished his second nine in 35 (+5) to end the day at +3 and +1 for the week.
Tech was led on Saturday but sophomore Calum Scott, who fired a two-over round of 72.
As a team the Red Raiders finished in 16th place, trailing No. 6 Stanford (+16), No. 25 Georgia and BYU by just one shot for 13th place. The Cougars, who played their third round on Thursday due to a religious exemption will end the three rounds at +39.
Overall, the third-ranked Illini lead the championship after two rounds at two-under par. Illinois shot an incredible team score of 273 (-7) on Saturday to take a three-shot lead at -2 for the week.
No. 9 Florida sits five shots up on No. 2 UNC and Friday's 18-hole leader No. 11 Georgia Tech who both sit at +6.
No. 8 Pepperdine is fifth at +8 for the week, followed by No. 1 Vanderbilt (+10). No. 7 Florida State (+11) and Virginia (+11) are tied for seventh, with No. 15 Alabama and No. 4 Arizona State tied for ninth at +12.
No. 12 Auburn and No. 14 Texas A&M share 11th place, two shots ahead of the trio of Georgia, BYU and Stanford at +16.
Tech sits two shots ahead of both Colorado (+19) and San Francisco (+19) and three shots ahead of No. 10 Oklahoma (+20).
Arkansas and No. 23 Ohio State are tied for 20th at +22, followed by No. 19 Oregon (+23), No. 18 Mississippi State (+26), No. 17 Texas (+27) and New Mexico (+29).
Duke (+30), Chattanooga (+34), Colorado State (+35), ETSU (+40) and Baylor (+41) round out the 30-team field.
As he did on Friday, Georgia Tech's Ross Steelman enjoys a three-shot lead on the individual national championship. After firing a bogey-free 64 on Friday, Steelman recorded a one-under round of 69 to enjoy the three-shot lead.
