The Tech senior looks to join John Rahm as the only player to win amateur golf’s most prestigious award in back-to-back years
FORT WORTH – Fresh off one of the most accomplished seasons in college golf history, the accolades keep rolling in for Ludvig Aberg, who was named a finalist for the 2023 Ben Hogan Award, Thursday.
Looking to become just the second player in the awards illustrious history to repeat, Aberg will be joined by sophomore Gordon Sargent of Vanderbilt and Michael Thorbjornsen of Stanford in just under three weeks' time at the Hogan Award ceremony (Monday, May 22nd) in Fort Worth.
The top-ranked player in both the WAGR and the PGA TOUR U Rankings, Aberg enters NCAA Tournament play with one of the most decorated resumes in all of college golf.
A three-time individual winner this season, Aberg completed the most dominate performance in the history of the Big 12 Championships a week ago when he rolled to an eight-shot victory that shattered multiple different Big 12 Championship records including: lowest score to par (-15), lowest three round score (196) and lowest four round score (265).
Maybe the most impressive accomplishment for Aberg on the week, was a stretch of 30 holes of bogey-free golf. The stretch allowed Aberg to finish with a lower-to-par score than the second, third and fourth place finishers combined.
In addition to repeating as individual medalist at Big 12s last week, Aberg also closed out a three-peat at 'The Prestige' where he finished two shots clear of a crowd that included Thorbjornsen. Aberg's third individual title came at the Valspar Collegiate.
For the season, Aberg has six top-five finishes and has finished no worse than eighth at any of the eight events he's played. In 25 rounds, Aberg has shot higher than a 71 just one time, has 22 rounds of par or better and has 16 rounds in the 60s. For the season, Aberg's stroke average sits at 68.6, which would shatter the program record by nearly three strokes.
In addition to his exploits collegiately, Aberg has played in three professional events, making the cut at both the Arnold Palmer and the PGA TOURs Valspar.
As previously mentioned, the winner of the 2023 Ben Hogan Award will be revealed on Monday, May 22 live from Fort Worth.
Aberg and the No. 5 ranked Red Raiders were named a No. 1 seed at the Norman regional on Wednesday afternoon and open play at the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 15.
