Texas Tech releases rendering of new football turf
July 21, 2023 | Football
New playing surface will be completed in August ahead of Texas Tech’s Sept. 9 home opener versus Oregon
LUBBOCK, Texas – Walk around Jones AT&T Stadium and you'll see plenty of construction – cranes on both sides of the stadium and consistent work being performed to be ready for the Sept. 9 home opener versus Oregon.
Â
One of those projects is installing a new artificial playing surface from Hellas that began in recent weeks. The new turf surface, which will feature black end zones with white font lettering, will be completed in August in order for head coach Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders to utilize Jones AT&T Stadium for practice leading into the season.
Â
Texas Tech has contracted the services of Hellas, which is in the process of installing its Helix® turf, the company's latest technology that has been installed recently at several NFL facilities, namely The Star in Frisco and AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles Rams), Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas Raiders) and the University of Kansas Health System Training Complex of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Â
Texas Tech originally announced the project's approval in April to go along with a new lighting system designed by Musco. Construction crews began installing the new lighting system in the past weeks in anticipation of completion in August. Both projects are estimated to cost roughly $2.2 million and will be funded through philanthropic gifts to the athletics department.
Â
All the construction around Jones AT&T Stadium highlights the investment Texas Tech is making with its football program as work continues on the $220 million south end zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project. Texas Tech has continued to receive tremendous support from a fundraising perspective in an effort to raise more than $100 million for the project.
