Ludvig Aberg selected to Team Europe for 44th Ryder Cup

The native of Sweden was named a captains pick ahead of the event later this month in Rome
LUBBOCK, TEXAS – It's been a heck of year for Ludvig Aberg.
Â
First came a historic repeat victory at the Big 12 Championship. Then a second-consecutive Ben Hogan Award. Next, Aberg finished first in the PGA TOUR U Rankings, earning his full PGA TOUR Card for the remainder of the 2023 season and the entire 2024 season.
Â
Later in May, Aberg became the seventh golfer all-time to sweep the three national awards: Hogan, Haskins and Nicklaus.
Â
Just yesterday, the former Red Raider earned his first professional victory, winning the European Omega Masters in come-from-behind fashion.
Â
Now? A Ryder Cup berth. A berth that exemplifies the Texas Tech moto of From Here, It's Possible.
A berth that three months ago seemed not only unlikely, but improbable.
Â
Not a bad first 71 days as a pro, huh.
Â
In an announcement on England's Sky Sports, European Captain Luke Donald made it official, selecting Aberg to the 12-man squad. With the selection, Aberg became the fastest Ryder Cup selection in the events nearly 110 year history, surpassing Rickie Fowlers' selection after just 10 months.
It's also the fewest professional events played (9) by a Ryder Cup selection, surpassing former Ryder Cup great Sergio Garcia who selected after his 10th pro event.
Â
He will be joined on the European squad by Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton, Hojgaard, Fed Ex Cup Champion Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka and Justin Rose.
Â
Set to begin on Sept. 29, the Ryder Cup is a bi-annual event that pits the 12 best golfers from the United States and Europe in a team-based competition.
Â
Often referred to as the best event in professional golf, Team USA and Team Europe will battle at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside Rome in the race to 18.5 points.
Â
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
Â
LUDVIG ABERG:
"It's been quite a lot the last couple of months, but it's been so exciting, and I cannot wait for Rome. If you would have told me a couple of months ago that I was going to be in these conversations, I wouldn't have believed you, but I'm super fortunate to be in this position. And I cannot thank the Captains and Vice Captains enough."
Â
TEAM EUROPE CAPTAIN LUKE DONALD:
"We obviously knew what Ludvig was doing on the college scene. When you look at what he did during his four years the only comparable players were Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm in the last 20 years. He's that good. So we were keeping an eye on him. And then I played with him in Detroit and was blown away by his game. He continued to progress, and I challenged him to come over to Europe and play a couple of weeks. He finished fifth in the Czech and obviously we know what he did yesterday. Four birdies in the last five holes it was a walk in the park for him. For someone who is so inexperienced it was just so, so impressive." Â
