No. 19 Tech downs Cincinnati, 3-0
October 20, 2024 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders extended their unbeaten streak to 13 straight (11-0-2) and won for the eighth time in nine matches
CINCINNATI – Taylor Zdrojewski had a goal and an assist and drew a key PK to help push No. 19 Texas Tech Soccer to a 3-0 win over Cincinnati Sunday at Gettler Stadium.
Â
In the victory, Texas Tech (13-2-2, 7-0-2) got a beautiful first half goal from Kaitlyn Giametta as well as late goals from Peyton Parsons and Zdrojewski to close out their eighth win in nine matches and to extend their overall unbeaten streak to 13-straight (11-0-2).
Â
On the week Zdrojewski factored in all four goals, as she scored, recorded an assist and drew two PKs. Â
Â
Up 1-0 at the break after a beautiful combination play from Zdrojewski and Giametta, the Red Raiders earned the 81st-minute penalty kick when Zdrojewski was dragged to the ground in the box.
Â
Stepping to the spot, Parsons slotted a rocket into the left-corner of the net and past Cincinnati (6-7-3, 2-5-2 Big 12) goalkeeper Anna Rexford. The goal for Parsons was her ninth of the season and fourth from the spot.
Â
Armed with the 2-0 lead with less than nine minutes to play, the Red Raiders didn't settle, as Parsons played Zdrojewski deep inside the UC 18-yard box. The forward took a couple of dribbles toward the goal and ripped a shot across the goal line and into the far corner of the net.
The strike was Zdrojewski's seventh goal of the season.
Â
In victory, goalkeeper Faith Nguyen made two saves to close out her third straight clean sheet and 10th total clean sheet. Nguyen's 10 clean sheets in a season are the fifth-most by a Tech GK in program history.
Â
Sunday's win also improved the Red Raiders to 32-0-1 in their 33 matches when scoring at least twice and to 22-0-5 in their last 27 Big 12 matches. The 27-match unbeaten streak is the second-longest streak in the country trailing just St. Louis (28).
Â
With one match remaining in the regular season, the Red Raiders sit tied with TCU atop the Big 12 tables. With a win on Friday night against BYU and either a TCU loss or draw, the Red Raiders can close out their second-straight Big 12 title.
Â
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"We've talked all year that when we get a one goal lead, we cannot take our foot off the gas. The couple of times that we have, it's cost us. At halftime we talked about having a one goal lead and that we couldn't slow down, because the clock wasn't going to just run out. We needed to put them away. The attack that led to Z getting taken down, so Peyton could put away her PK, was an example of that. On the third goal we were going to the corner to try and kill the clock at the end of the game. When Z got the ball, she looked over and there was nobody between her and the keeper. I was saying 'don't do it' until she did it, so good for her. She took it upon herself to put the game away and that goal was magic."
Â
On managing the five-day road trip:
"Five-day road trips are a problem for a lot of college soccer teams in the country, but like I've said before this team just likes to be together. They enjoy the hotel. They enjoy the bus. And they enjoy the travel. The Freshman class is amongst the loudest one we've ever had and they're always up to something. This group makes the road fun. We had to spend more time in our hotel this weekend due to a festival going on around us, in downtown Cincinnati, so that limited our ability to wander around. They didn't care and we fine with it. The girls did a good job of getting their homework done and enjoying time with one another. That makes a five-day trip so much more palatable."

UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders close out the regular season and will seek to clinch at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title when BYU pays its first ever visit to the John Walker Soccer Complex. First touch from Lubbock is set for 7 p.m.
