Texas Tech finishes day two of match play strong
October 08, 2024 | Men's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team fell short against Colorado on Tuesday morning in the first bout of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, on day two, but bounced back with a win in the second match against Cincinnati at Houston Oaks Country Club. It sets up a fifth-place match on Wednesday morning against Oklahoma State to conclude the event for the Red Raiders.
A 1-1-3 loss to Colorado dropped the Red Raiders into a tie for the Pool D lead, its designated four-team pool of the event alongside Baylor, Colorado and TCU. It tied Texas Tech with Baylor atop the pool, based on total points (6), after wins against Baylor and TCU on Monday. Despite the Red Raiders' win against the Bears, the tiebreaker rules were set to utilize total match points, which pushed Baylor into the Pool D lead (8.5-7.5), and pushed the Red Raiders out of reach of the semifinal match on Tuesday afternoon.
Despite the heartbreak loss, the Red Raiders bounced back strongly in the second match, winning 3-2-0 against Cincinnati. Charlie DeLong won his third match of the event overall while Sean Keeling grabbed his first win. DeLong finished three shots up with two holes left while Keeling finished five shots up with three to go. The victory was secured thanks to an impressive performance on the 18th hole by Tim Wiedemeyer, who hit a 30-foot putt to win his pairing by one and push the Red Raiders to victory.
In the morning match, the Red Raiders held a 3-1-1 lead through 14 holes against the Buffs, with Connor Graham, Calum Scott and Wiedemeyer all holding onto advantages. At the time, Graham was leading 4-up, Scott was 2-up and Wiedemeyer was 1-up. Graham kept the foot on the gas and won 5&3 while Scott dropped holes 15 and 17 to even the match - he and his opponent tied the 18th hole to keep things square. Wiedemeyer dropped holes 16, 17 and 18 as he saw his opponent win, 2-up. Keeling and DeLong were the other two Red Raiders in the morning lineup versus Colorado.
All teams will tee off on Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. to wrap up the Big 12 Match Play Tournament.
