Tech wins tournament in California
February 17, 2024 | Women's Tennis
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – It was a successful final day of the round robin tournament as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned two victories on Saturday to win the tournament title. Facing host team UC Santa Barbara in the morning, the Lady Raiders were able to get a decisive, 4-1 win before downing conference foe Kansas in an exciting, 4-3 match later in the afternoon.
After getting their match postponed to today with a 3-1 advantage, the Lady Raiders (5-3) made quick work of the host team to earn their second victory of the weekend. Yesterday, Texas Tech got straight-set singles wins from Cristina Tiglea, Mariya Polishchuk and Avelina Sayfetdinova at courts one, two and three, respectively. The Gauchos (3-2) were able to tack a point on the board when they won at four singles.
Prior to the match being postponed, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko was leading against Lucy Lu at court five, 6-3, 0-1. Dmitrichenko, who is making her 2024 dual debut, provided the winning punch for Texas Tech. She and Lu traded games until it was tied at 4-all, before Dmitrichenko won the next two games to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-4 score. Over at court six, Andreea Lila and Carla Pacot were going at it as the Lady Raider took a 5-3 lead in the first set before the match was stopped yesterday. Today, the sophomore was leading 7-5, 2-1 before Dmitrichenko clinched.
In the second match of the day against Kansas (2-4), the Lady Raiders lost a close doubles point to the Jayhawks. First, the No. 12 duo of Metka Komac and Sayfetdinova earned a 6-3 win at the top court over Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse Van Vuuren. But, Kansas posted the next two wins at courts two and three to clinch the doubles point.
Kansas added the next point on the board after taking the singles match at court four to lead 2-0. Freshman Jermine Sherif stopped the Jayhawk momentum briefly when she picked up a dominating victory at court six over Jasmine Adams, 6-2, 6-2. Then, Kansas went up by a 3-1 score after Mulville won at two singles.
Tech was down but not out. Winning all three first sets on the remaining courts, the Lady Raiders had the advantage and held it. Over at court five, Lila grabbed a win against Jocelyn Massey, 6-0, 6-4. Then, Sayfetdinova would tie the match at 3-all after overtaking Janse Van Vuuren at court three in straight-sets, 7-6 (0), 6-4.
It all came down to court one where No. 87 Tiglea was competing against Maria Titova. The Lady Raider would take an early lead with a dominant, 6-1 first set win. But, the Jayhawk evened things up when she won set two by a 6-4 score. In the third and deciding set, Tiglea went down 3-1 after Titova started out hot.
However, the Lady Raider kept fighting back to eventually tie things at 3-3. When the set was even at 4-4, Titova served a strong game leading in points, 40-15, and looking to retake the lead. But, Tiglea would claim three-consecutive points to break serve for the 5-4 advantage. Tiglea held serve easily in the next game to win it, 6-4, and clinch the match for the Lady Raiders for the third time this year.
Up next, the Lady Raiders compete at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on February 23-24 in Montgomery, Ala.
