Lady Raiders blank Paladins

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After winning all six first sets and only dropping one total set against Furman, the No. 22 Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 4-0 sweep of the Paladins to open the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Raiders (6-3) got the early lead on the Paladins (2-6) when they won the doubles point. Grabbing the first doubles victory of the match was No. 7-ranked Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova, who decisively won over the duo of Jess Dawson and Maeve Thornton at court one, 6-1.
Then, Mariya Polishchuk and Cristina Tiglea clinched the point at court two when they defeated the tandem of Macy Hitchcock and Ellie Schulson. The Lady Raiders were up 4-3, then would win the next two games en route to the 6-3 victory.
In singles, Komac got the second point of the match with a quick and commanding, 6-0, 6-2, victory against Hitchcock at court five. Over at court three, Sayfetdinova earned another win for Tech when she overtook Schulson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Clinching the match for the Lady Raiders was Polishchuk at court two against Thornton. Polishchuk was able to win the first set by a dominant, 6-2, score. Then, she would go down 4-5 in the following set before rallying off three-consecutive games to claim the match, 6-2, 7-5.
In the evening match, the Lady Raiders were taking on Wake Forest in a round of doubles. The Demon Deacons went out to a quick lead after taking the match at court three by a 6-1 score.
The Lady Raiders evened the score when Polishchuk and Tiglea earned their second victory of the day together. Taking on the duo of Krystal Blanch and Casie Wooten, the Lady Raiders went out to a 4-1 lead before the Deacons tied it at 4-all. But, the Tech tandem won the next two games for the 6-4 win.
It all came down to court one as No. 7 Komac and Sayfetdinova were competing against Marcella Cruz and Brooke Killingsworth. The Tech pairing was down most of the match as Wake Forest held the 5-3 advantage. However, the Lady Raiders showed why they're ranked in the top-10 nationally after winning the next four games to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
Up next, the Lady Raiders will conclude singles play with a 1-0 lead against Wake Forest tomorrow morning.
