LUBBOCK, Texas – Earning her first career Big 12 weekly award, junior Cristina Tiglea was named the Big 12 Player of the Week after her dominant performance at the UC Santa Barbara round robin tournament as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
The Milan, Italy native was on fire this weekend, helping the Lady Raiders (5-3) to a perfect 3-0 week with victories against Arizona, UC Santa Barbara and Kansas to claim the tournament title. Tiglea posted three singles wins, two of them against ranked opponents, a double win and two match clinches.
First against Arizona, Tiglea, who played court one in singles all week, posted a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win against No. 118 Reece Carter. In doubles, which was played after singles, Tiglea and teammate Mariya Polishchuk clinched the match at court two whenever they defeated the Arizona duo of Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins, 6-3. Against UCSB, Tiglea would earn another ranked singles win after beating No. 64 Amelia Honer at the top court by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 score to help the Lady Raiders lead 3-1 in the match.
In the night cap against Kansas, Tiglea provided the winning punch against the Jayhawks after clinching her second match this week. Tiglea was taking on Maria Titova and went up early 6-1 before Titova evened the match with a 6-4 second set. The Jayhawk went ahead 3-1 and was up 40-15 in the following game until Tiglea won three-straight points to make it 3-2. Then, Tiglea tied the match at 4-4 before winning the next two games for a 6-4 third set win and clinch of the match.
Tiglea currently leads Texas Tech with 11 overall singles wins and five dual singles wins as she is 5-1 on the year at court one. She also leads the team with six ranked singles victories. In doubles, Tiglea totals 10 overall wins and four in dual matches so far.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are headed to Montgomery, Ala., to compete in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on February 23-24.
