Lady Raiders up against two ranked foes at home
March 27, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – After defeating a ranked BYU squad, Tech is staying home at the McLeod Tennis Center for a pair of ranked matches against TCU on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m. and Baylor on Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m.
The No. 25 Texas Tech Lady Raiders (13-5, 6-1 Big 12) captured their fourth win in a row over the BYU Cougars last Saturday, 5-2. The win marks the squad's sixth conference victory on the year with Adam Herendeen becoming just the third head coach in Lady Raiders history to win at least six Big 12 matches in a season, joining Todd Petty and Cari Groce.
Doubles continues to be a major strength for the Lady Raiders. Court one's No. 6-ranked duo of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova, along with court two's Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk, each captured their 13th win en route to winning Tech's 14th doubles point this year. Komac and Sayfetdinova were also able to record their second ranked win and 21st overall after a 6-1 rout of No. 40 Emilee Astle and Kendall Kovick.
Alongside Polishchuk and Sayfetdinova, No. 55 Tiglea joined the 10-win club with a straight-set victory over No. 87 Yujia Huang, 6-1, 7-5, a win that marks her ninth ranked victory on the year. Polishchuk, Sayfetdinova and Tiglea each possess a win percentage mark of above 66.7 percent and combine to win just above 68 percent of all of their matches.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The No. 54-ranked Texas Christian Horned Frogs (10-4, 6-2 Big 12) come to Lubbock on a three-match winning streak over Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State, in which they dropped only two matches out of a total 14. Sophomore Yu-Chin Tsai and junior Jade Otway both lead the Horned Frogs in dual singles wins with nine apiece, with Tsai holding down the fourth court and Otway splitting time between the top two courts. Senior Isabel Pascual is right behind them with eight wins over the top three courts while Helena Narmont and No. 121 Destinee Martins each hold a 7-2 record. In doubles, the tandem of Otway and Pascual captured the best winning percentage with an 80 percent winning mark on court two while the pair of Tsai and Chiho Mushika have tied them in dual doubles wins with eight on court one. Texas Tech is 12-5 overall and has won eight of their last nine against TCU, with the Horned Frogs winning the most recent match, 4-3, in April of 2023.
The No. 31 Baylor Bears (15-6, 7-1 Big 12) will first travel to Provo, Utah to play No. 51 BYU before coming to Lubbock to face the Lady Raiders. Baylor is heading into that contest with BYU after winning their last two matches against Iowa State and Kansas. The No. 101-ranked senior Miska Kadelckova leads the Bears singles effort by earning 13 dual singles wins on the year including a ranked win over then-No. 38 Carly Briggs of Florida. Alabama graduate transfer Isabella Harvison joins the Slovakian as the only Bears with at least 10 wins in dual singles on the campaign with freshman Zuzanna Frankowska not far behind with nine wins of her own. Tech has historically struggled against the Bears with an 8-13 record overall, but have done better at home against Baylor where the Lady Raiders hold a 6-5 home record. Texas Tech has also gone 6-4 in their last 10 matches against Baylor and won its most recent match, 4-3.
