LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 25 Texas Tech Lady Raiders were able to hold the No. 31 Baylor Bears scoreless in a 4-0 sweep on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.Â
The Lady Raiders (15-5, 8-1 Big 12) and the Bears (15-8, 7-3 Big 12) started off the match with a trio of tough doubles contests. The No. 6-ranked court one team of Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac were able to grab an early, 2-0 lead against the Bear's Zuzanna Kubacha and Sierra Berry. Kubacha and Berry were able to apply pressure on Tech by winning two of the next three games to cut into the lead, 3-2. Despite the adversity, Komac and Sayfetdinova were able to win the first doubles set for the Lady Raiders, 6-4, as the pair won their 15th dual doubles match on the season.
Despite losing the set on court three, Camryn Stepp and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko showed a great amount of poise. Down 5-0 to Miska Kadleckova and Zuzanna Frankowska, the pair rallied four-straight games to put the pressure on the Bears. However, the Bears would tie up doubles by winning the court, 6-4.
Court two's tandem of Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk and Baylor's No. 66 doubles team of Isabella Harvison and Liubov Kostenko were locked in a battle with the first six games being split between the two teams. At 3-all and needing a spark, Tiglea and Polishchuk were able to break serve and rattled off three-straight to win the set, 6-3, clinch the doubles point for Tech, the 16th doubles point on the year, and marked the duo's first ranked dual doubles win on the season.
In singles, Komac and Kubacha began their match with a tight first set on court five. With the set at 4-3, Kubacha tied it up, then sent it into a tiebreaker where she led early, 4-2. Behind in the game and needing points to keep pace, Komac won three of the next four points and broke Kubacha's serve in the process. The senior put up the final two points of the set in her service game to win the tiebreaker and the set, 7-6 (5). While Kubacha was able to take the first game of the second set, Komac kept up the pressure and won her match, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and the second point of the contest for Tech.
Dmitrichenko started out the gate in dominant fashion on court four posting a bagel in her first set against Baylor's Berry, 6-0. Berry was able to battle back in the second set to win it, 6-3. Despite the swing in momentum, Dmitrichenko finished the job in the third set, 6-1, to give Tech its third point of the contest.
On court six, Baylor's Frankowska was able to come out against Andreea Lila swinging and quickly put the sophomore in a 1-6 hole. Starting in the second set, however, Lila was able to bounce back into her usual dominant form. She started off with the quick, 4-1 advantage and cashed it in for a 6-1 victory in the second set. The third set was much of the same for the Romanian with Lila going up 5-1. Frankowska was able to put some pressure on Lila by winning the next two games, but Lila was able to finish off her match and clinch the match for Tech with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, victory.
Polishchuk was locked in a battle in her match against Harvison on the second court. Polishchuk was down 0-3 in her first set before the senior fought her way back to tie up the set 4-4. Harvison was able to win the set 6-4, then went up 3-0 again in her second set. Even with all of the adversity facing her, Polishchuk was able to battle back and force a tiebreaker. After splitting the first 12 points, the Russian won the set 7-6 (6) and then the next two games of the third set before the match was left unfinished.
With the victory, the Lady Raiders have tied a program record for most conference wins in a season with eight and have four more regular season Big 12 matches left.
Up next, the Lady Raiders travel to Austin, Texas to play the No. 7 Texas Longhorns on Thursday, April 4 at 2 p.m.
