No. 11 Tech sits third entering final day of Cabo Collegiate
March 04, 2024 | Men's Golf
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team posted the lowest card of the day in Monday's second round of the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club, a 12-under-par 272, as the Red Raiders (-6) shot up to third place on the team leaderboard and sit just three strokes back from No. 9 Arkansas (-9).
It was a team effort for Tech, as the team saw all five individuals shoot under-par, the only program in the 15-team field to do so. Leading the way was sophomore Matthew Comegys, who propelled himself into the top five on the individual chart with a 4-under-par 67 on day two. Comegys currently sits just three shots behind Stanford's Michael Thorbjornsen, who leads the field at 8-under-par 134 following a blistering Cabo Collegiate second round low of 6-under-par 65.
Two shots behind Comegys sits senior Tyran Snyders, who used a 3-under-par 68 to position himself in a four-way tie for 10th place entering the final round. After finishing even-par on Sunday, Snyders got off to a scorching start on day two with birdies on five of his first eight holes and remains in contention for his third top-ten finish of the spring.Â
Tech received a huge lift in round two from junior Charlie DeLong, who saw a seven-stroke improvement from his day one performance with a 3-under-par 68 on day two. DeLong birdied six times on the day and ascended 26 spots into a tie for 25th on the individual leaderboard as a result, where he currently sits along with teammate Calum Scott, who committed just one bogey on Monday en route to a 2-under-par 69.Â
Baard Skogen added to a rock-solid day for the Red Raiders with a respectable 1-under-par 70, though his score did not count towards Tech's round two collective score. The senior currently sits in a tie for 32nd place on the individual standings.Â
Like the previous two rounds, the third and final round of the 2024 Cabo Collegiate will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT. Tech will tee-off between holes No. 1-4 along with the tournament's other three tournament leaders in No. 9 Arkansas, No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Arizona State.Â
